Play and Playing:
The importance of play in the development and learning of young children
Course participant will have the opportunity to:
• Explore the features of play in early childhood from birth to seven years
• Think about the implications of putting effective play in practice
• Plan how to take play forward with children in the home learning environment, a group situation and within school
• Consider possible ways of developing learning through play
Early childhood teachers, childminder network leaders, practitioners at level 3 who are experienced in their practice
Course led by Tina Bruce
Tina is a Froebel trained teacher, who also trained to teach children with profound and partial hearing loss. She taught in mainstream and special schools in Dorset and London, and ran a home based playgroup, working closely with health visitors when her children were very young.
She was head of the Froebel Research Nursery School, based in the Froebel Educational Institute, and became Director of the Centre for Early Childhood (now Roehampton University). She has worked with British Council in Egypt and New Zealand, and is currently linked to a project in Soweto. She is a member of the Early Educational Advisory Group, appointed by the Minister for Children.
She has written many books and articles, the first being ‘Early Childhood Education’(1987, 3rd edition 2005) and the latest ‘The Essentials of Literacy’ (2008)written with Jenny Spratt.
