Mathematical Development

Description

It is widely recognised that mathematical development has taken a back seat to other Areas of Learning within early years. Practitioners often find it challenging to create the right environment for true mathematical thinking. We know that children develop their skills, knowledge and understanding of mathematics through oral, practical and play activities. This course will help you to provide opportunities for children to explore, estimate and solve real-life mathematical problems in both the indoor and the outdoor environment.

Objectives

Course participants will have the opportunity to:

  • Consider practical ways in which to promote positive attitudes to mathematics among young children
  • Explore how to promote mathematical understanding through play
  • Identify the dispositions and skills that children require to become confident learners of mathematics
  • Reflect on an appropriate balance between child initiated learning and focused teaching in mathematics
  • Develop a range of techniques and practical ways in which to engage and challenge all learners
