Creative Approaches to Literacy in KS2
Course participant will have the opportunity to:
• Explore ways teachers can plan a rich extended literacy curriculum, planning blocks of work around a strong well chosen book
• Consider key teaching approaches that support all children’s confidence and success as readers and writers, and ensure meaningful opportunities for talk
• Reflect upon how these approaches can work within the revised curriculum for KS2
• Discuss a range of selected literature and take away sample units of work to try out

Course Provider Deborah Nicholson
Deborah Nicholson has 27 years experience as a primary teacher, deputy headteacher and advisory teacher for primary English. She is a skilled inset provider, who has extensive experience of working with teachers and schools. She worked for the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education in London, where she led courses and conferences for teachers and teaching assistants, and reading and writing projects for groups of schools. Deborah’s courses are underpinned by her belief that by engaging children with powerful literature, using certain teaching approaches, they can become involved and reflective readers and writers. She is co-author of Bookpower, Literacy through Literature for Years 5 and 6, and has contributed to many other publications for teachers.
Deborah is now a freelance consultant for language and literacy, offering training and advice for schools and teachers in South Wales.
